Marlene Murphy was born in Detroit, where she married a stockbroker in 1950. They had one child, Donna, but were divorced in 1963. The stockbroker settled some money on her, and she left to open a fashion shop in San Francisco. She is outgoing and successful, with an excellent eye for the modern fashions and a jaundiced idea of the world, but a surprising maternal and romantic streak that appears abruptly.
Unfortunately, Donna inherited the cold, calculating genes of her father, along with a sense for marketing all sorts of things, and when she discovers that Brad Hale, someone she knew at San Francisco State was the son of the famous children's book author Mike Berryman, she seeks him out, researches him thoroughly and gets herself set up as Brad's girlfriend.
