Leaving the Screened Life

Leaving the Screened Life

Window shopping, through
other people’s lives, grows tiring.
Click and share your last meal,
or a recent fleeting moment of joy
spikes oxytocin, monetarily
producing little profundity
of thoughts, relationships or art.
Instead, scrolling erodes confidence.
Exiting the pool of blue light,
emanating in High Definition,
feels chilling. Wrap up
in something genuinely warm;
a book, a conversation
brisk walk, listening to music.

This is still raw, this separation
from shared vignettes of life,
but everyday, life passes
by truer windows.
People walk dogs,
hurry to market, to school.
Some walk with their faces
in the deep well of screens.
Others seem content
to let their senses take the reins.
Take notice of what the Sun’s
rays accent rather than some
frigid light emitted from within
an artificial space,
manipulated to create a response,
make a sale, prompt a scroll,
shortchange a soul.

Choose to follow the algorithm
that is of the rain, the seed,
the plant, the flower, the seed
the snow, the rot, the warmth
repeated in loops that inspire
you to rise, aware
that it will continue,
despite wrinkles in your face,
missed dance crazes, and memes.
Memory will suffice,
if senses record and store
in 5 dimensions,
rather than being confined
to flat screen fishing.
