If you don’t know the word vicissitudes, look it up. You may find a definition that fits your life. My definition of the word for here is the varying circumstances in life’s ways.
Some of our time we spend planning and thinking about who we are and what we are doing. If we succeed then we feel good about life. Then there comes times when events happen that are not in our plans and that affect our living. There is an old saying that speaks of how it is when we are young, people and things take us places. Then there comes a time, we are in charge of our lives and mostly can plan and do was we please. Then we get old, and people and events take us places that we do not like. The old German saying, "We grow too soon old and too late smart." fits right in my thinking. Another old saying, "It is a shame that all that energy and actions are wasted on young people."
The other day, I was sitting in a chair in a big store. As I watched people pass by, I noticed how people walk. There were people who strode by very quickly, there were others who strolled along and, there were still others who were crippled in some way and hobbled along. They way we move through life is like that. It happens to us all.
The vicissitudes of life are like our walking. Sometimes life is good, some times only so so, and some times not good at all. It is best that we appreciate every thing that happens to us. We often learn from events that leave us unhappy and good times that we take for granted. It would really be boring if life was always the same. Troubles, mistakes and misfortune, when they are over, ought to make us appreciate the good times.
It is a good thing when we can be in contact with the each day in which we live. Reliving the past with either memories of good times or when things were bad, wastes that day. Depending upon a better time ahead is difficult because we cannot control those days.
Now. You are probably seeing that these are words of an old man. Life for me has had its bad times and its good times. Looking back at those days, those days were certainly entertaining and also instructive. I cannot change any of those days, nor would I if I could. Living these days with the aches and pains of old age, I hope that I have learned the lessons of vicissitude living. Troubles and joys, health and illness are all part of life to be are lived.
