There are scattered deposits of highly exotic and down-right weird materials. Current thinking is that sometime in the early history of the planet a really big, really odd thing (hypothetically refered to as the Gizmotch) explode nearby and scatter lumps of whatever throughout the upper layers of the planet.
Deep into pre-history two of these "Black Coal" and "Orange Coal" where burned in order to create respectively warmth and waking dreams. A hundred and eighty years ago, the Wizard of Marshal Field Tomas Telsa (whose motto was: "Anything is inflammable if you flam it hard enough") played around with getting odd stuff to burn and looking for uses of the resulting emissions. One the the first substances he studied was BlueCoal which when burned causes nearby objects to float; this technology in itself enabled global transportation for the first time.
