The Dante quote is from Inferno Canto XXXIV of the Divine Comedy, the line "shadow of night emerging over the little globes of Earth" refers to the emergence of Dante and Virgil from Hell to the Southern Hemisphere, where it is morning while still night in the Northern Hemisphere where they began their journey.
